Arutha, stems from the Sanskrit word for “meaning”, which is shared across Sinhala (අරුත, Arutha) and Tamil (அர்த்தம், Arttam).
Arutha is dedicated to making economics meaningful. Through research and economic civic education we break down complex issues so everyone can understand and participate in shaping their economic future.

Public Finance
We bring a political economy approach to public finance. The 2022 economic crisis was rooted in long-standing public financial mismanagement, especially poor debt management and weak tax collection. Through research, analysis and data we provide clarity on the country's debt dynamics and investigate Sri Lanka’s tax system in depth.

Governance
At Arutha, we look at economics through this wider lens. Our work examines the overall economic system: who makes decisions, how they are made and whether the right protections are in place. Through research, advocacy and awareness we highlight where economic governance can be strengthened and why it matters.

Political Economy
Through research and advocacy, we examine Sri Lanka’s economy through a political economy lens, mapping how global developments intersect with local economic realities. While our work has consistently explored China-Sri Lanka relations, we take a look beyond bilateral relations to examine the broader geopolitical context.
